Abstract

This study investigated the level of heavy metals contamination of soils around Olorunda mining site in Sepeteri town,OyoState,Nigeria.
Soil samples were collected atthedepthof0-20cm randomly at different sampling points around the mining site.
Quantitative contamination indices such as Contamination Factor (CF), Pollution Load Index (PLI), Geo-accumulation Index (Igeo), Degree of Contamination (Cdeg) and Enrichment Factor (EF) were used to assess the contamination status of the heavy metals in the soil samples.
The study revealed that Fe and Mn were the main polluting heavy metals in the study site such that the trend of heavy metal contamination was established as: Fe > Mn > Cu > Zn > Cr >Pb >Cd.
This study obtained the baseline data of heavy metals concentration in soils and these findings will help in designing a pollution abatement strategy to control the spread of pollutants in the environment surrounded by mining activities.
