Abstract

Abstract

Energy storage systems (ESS) plays a pivotal role in reliable and sustainable operation of renewable energy systems. However, ESS perform differently under different loading conditions. This study investigated the performance of Flow (F), Lithium-Ion (LI), and Lead-Acid (LA) ESS under residential (RL), commercial (CL), industrial (IL), and community (ComL) load profiles using HOMER software. Performance evaluation was based on storage depletion (SD), Losses, annual throughput (AT), autonomy (Auto), usable storage capacity (USC), total system cost (TSC), and levelized cost of energy (LCOE). The simulation results revealed that FESS possessed the lowest SD of 5.38 kWh/yr under RL while the lowest Losses of 233 kWh/yr was obtained for LIESS under RL. Similarly, the highest AT of 5,586,275 kWh/yr was found in LAESS under IL while the highest USC of 41,751 kWh was recorded in LAESS under IL. Economically, the lowest TSC of $32,318.56 was recorded for FESS under RL and lowest LCOE of $0.5263 for FESS under CL. It can be generally concluded from this study that load type generally impacts the technical, and economic performance of the selected ESS. The study pursues realization of sustainable development goal 7 (SDG 7) as it finds application as a guide in the planning, design, and deployment of renewable energy systems.
